L2TP/IPsec
Windows XP OpenVPN Instructions
Kepard support
If you have installation questions or need to reach Kepard support, please complete our support ticket.
How to Install
- To download the OpenVPN Windows installer, visit the OpenVPN downloads page.
- This is a simple, user-friendly GUI-based OpenVPN client software package for configuration and management on Windows OS.
- Select the Windows Installer option.
- Click Run to run the installer.
- You may encounter a security prompt: "Do you want to run or save this file?" Click Run to run the software.
- You may encounter a User Account Control prompt: "A program needs your permission to continue." Click Continue.
- The Setup Wizard prompt will appear. Click Next to continue.
- The OpenVPN license agreement and terms appear. Click I Agree to continue.
- The component selection dialog appears. Leave all components checked with their default settings and click Next.
- Select your destination folder and click Install.
- Note the Destination Folder location during install (usually
C:\Program Files\OpenVPN) - When the installation is complete, click Next.
- The wizard will notify you of the completion of the installation and prompt you to click Finish.
- Download the Windows configuration ZIP from Kepard.
- Click Open.
- Extract configuration (SFX or ZIP) :
ZIP : Extract the files from the configuration ZIP into the config folder in the OpenVPN destination folder referenced in step 7. By default, it will be C:\Program Files\OpenVPN\config.
- Click Extract all files.
- "Select a Destination and Extract Files" prompt will appear. Click Browse.
- Locate the Destination Folder referred to in step 7, and find the config folder within it. Click Extract to begin extraction.
- Click Continue in the "Destination Folder Access Denied" window to allow access.
SFX : If you are changed the destination folder from step 7 then select changed, if you not changed the folder leave it to default and Click Extract
How to Connect
- Find the OpenVPN GUI icon on your desktop and right-click it to bring up a context menu.
- Select Run as Administrator.
- If a User Account Control prompt appears, click Continue.
- In the taskbar tray, right click on the OpenVPN GUI icon.
- Find the site to connect to from the menu, and choose Connect from the site's submenu.
- Enter your Kepard Login email and Password when prompted and click OK.
- The OpenVPN GUI icon in the tray will turn green once the secure connection is established.
How to Disconnect
- Right click on the OpenVPN GUI icon in the taskbar.
- Find the site you are connected to, and choose Disconnect from the site's submenu.
- The OpenVPN GUI icon in the tray will turn red once the disconnection is complete.
Windows Vista OpenVPN Instructions

How to Install
- To download the OpenVPN Windows installer, visit the OpenVPN downloads page.

- Select your destination folder and click Install.

- The wizard will notify you of the completion of the installation and will prompt you to click Finish.
- Download the Windows OpenVPN configurations archive from Kepard.
- Click Open.
- Extract configuration (SFX or ZIP) :
ZIP : Extract the files from the configuration ZIP into the config folder in the OpenVPN destination folder referenced in step 7. By default, it will be C:\Program Files\OpenVPN\config or C:\Program Files (x86)\OpenVPN\config.
- Click Extract all files.

- Find the OpenVPN GUI icon on your desktop, right-click on it, and choose Properties from the context menu.
- In the Properties window, click "Advanced..." then check "Run as administrator".
- Click OK to close the "Advanced Properties" window.
- Click OK to close the OpenVPN GUI Properties window.
How to Connect
- Find the OpenVPN GUI icon on your desktop and double-click it to launch OpenVPN.
- In the taskbar tray, right click on the OpenVPN GUI icon.
- Find the site to connect to from the menu, and choose Connect from the site's submenu.
- Enter your Kepard Login email and Password when prompted and click OK.
- The OpenVPN GUI icon in the tray will turn green once the secure connection is established.
How to Disconnect
- Right click on the OpenVPN GUI icon in the taskbar.
- Find the site you are connected to, and choose Disconnect from the site's submenu.
- The OpenVPN GUI icon in the tray will turn red once the disconnection is complete.

Linux OpenVPN Instructions

How to Install
- Open "Terminal", Applications->Accessories->Terminal
- Install network-manager-openvpn by typing in Terminal:
"sudo apt-get install network-manager-openvpn"
Press Enter (Enter password if it needed) - You will be prompted: "Do you want to continue? Y/n" Type "Y" and hit Enter
- Once installation is complete, restart Network Manager by typing:
"sudo restart network-manager"
Press Enter - Ok network-manager is now running. Now download Kepard OpenVPN Settings from: https://www.kepard.com/download/OpenVPNConfigs.zip and extract it.
- Open "Network Connections", go to: System->Preferences->Network Connections
- Click "Import"
- You will be prompted dialog: Navigate to extracted folder from step "5" and select one file (with extension ".ovpn") from de list. Click "Open"
- In the case "User name:" type your Kepard User Name, and password in case "Password:".
- Click "Apply"
How to Connect
- Click on the "Network Manager" icon (top right menu bar)
- Expand "VPN Connections"
- Choose your added server.
How to Disconnect
- Click on the "Network Manager" icon (top right menu bar)
- Expand "VPN Connections"
- Click "Disconnect VPN..."
Mac OS X OpenVPN Instructions

Download the Installation files
- Download Tunnelblick.
- Tunnelblick provides free, user-friendly control of OpenVPN client connections for Mac OS.
- Click the green arrow to the left of the newest version of Tunnelblick (we do not recommend using any beta versions).
- Download the Mac OS Configuration ZIP from Kepard
- To begin installation of OpenVPN for Mac OS, navigate to your Downloads folder and double click the Tunnelblick disc image (DMG) file you just downloaded.
- Double-click on the Tunnelblick icon in the Tunnelblick disk image Finder window
- A new dialogue box appears: "Tunnelblick is an application downloaded from the Internet. Are you sure you want to open it?" Click Open.
- An installation dialogue appears: "Install Tunnelblick?" Click Install.
- A dialogue box appears: "Installation succeeded. Tunnelblick was successfully installed. Do you wish to launch Tunnelblick now? (An administrator username and password will be required so Tunnelblick can be secured.)" Click Launch.
- You may see a dialogue box: "Tunnelblick needs to repair ownership/permissions of the program to secure it. Type your password to allow Tunnelblick to make changes." If so, enter your computer's admininstrator username and password and click OK.
- A new dialogue box appears. Click Create and open configuration folder. This will open the configuration folder in a new Finder window.
- Double-click the Mac OS Configuration ZIP folder in your Downloads folder.
- Select all contents of the Configuration ZIP folder and drag them to the open Tunnelblick configuration Finder window to copy them to there.
- Close the Tunnelblick configuration Finder window.
- Find the Tunnelblick icon in your menu bar (top right).
- Click on the Tunnelblick icon to bring down the dropdown menu and click on Details...
- The OpenVPN Log Output window will open. At the top of the window will be buttons with each server name. Click on each server name and uncheck the box next to Monitor Connection.
- Close the OpenVPN Log Output window.
- Click on the Tunnelblick icon in your menu bar.
- In the drop down menu, choose the server to which you wish to Connect.
- You may be prompted to enter your system administrator password to fix permissions for the configuration files. If so, enter your system username and password.
- You may be asked for your VPN login and password. Enter your Golden Frog login (e-mail address) and password. Click the box next to Save in Keychain to save the username and password for future connections. Click OK
- Once connected, the Tunnelblick icon will change from a dark tunnel to a lit tunnel.
- Click on the Tunnelblick icon in your menu bar.
- Select Disconnect from the drop down menu.

- Click Next
- Select Connect to the network at my workplace then Next
- Select Virtual Private Network connection then Next
- Type Kepard PPTP in the Company Name box then Next
- Enter one of the following names and click "Next"

- Click Add a shortcut to have a Kepard PPTP shortcut added to your desktop
- Click Finish

- Type your Kepard loin email and Password in their respective fields
- Click Connect

- Go to the Windows Menu (Start), then Control Panel
- Click on View network status and tasks
- If your Control Panel is changed to classic, Click to "Network and Sharing Center"
- Click Setup a new connection or network

Install the Network Manager PPTP plug-in
- Go to the System menu in the taskbar, expand the Administration menu and click on Synaptic Package Manager.
- In the search box, enter "pptp" and hit enter.
- Click the box next to "network-manager-pptp" and select Mark for installation. If the network-manager-pptp is already installed (the check box will be gray), exit the Synaptic Package Manager and proceed to VPN setup instructions below.
- The system may prompt you to install additional necessary components. Click on the Mark button to select the additional components.
- Click the green check mark in the toolbar to apply all selected changes and install the PPTP plug in.
- When prompted to apply the changes, click the Apply button.
- Close the Synaptic Package Manager
Setup the PPTP connection
- Expand the System menu and click on Network Connections to open the Network Connections control panel
- Click on the VPN tab. If the Add button on the VPN tab is grayed out, follow the instructions above to install the PPTP plug-in.
- Click the Add button to add a new VPN configuration.
- When prompted to choose a VPN connection type, choose Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) and click the Create button.
- In the Connection name: textbox, enter "Kepard PPTP"
- In the Gateway field enter one of the following names:
- pvpn1.de.kepard.com for Germany
- pvpn3.nl.kepard.com for Netherlands (P2P)
- pvpn2.nl.kepard.com for Netherlands (P2P)
- pvpn1.uk.kepard.com for United Kingdom
- pvpn3.uk.kepard.com for United Kingdom

- In the User name: textbox, enter your Kepard Login Email
- In the Password: textbox, enter your Kepard Password.
- Click the Advanced button to bring up an additional settings dialog.
- Check the Use Point-to-Point encryption (MPPE) box.
- Click the OK button
- Click the Apply button (you may be prompted to enter your password to store the configuration securely)
- Restart Network Manager (The best way we have found to restart Network Manager is to open a terminal and type "sudo /etc/init.d/network-manager restart". This will disconnect all of your network connections)
Establish a secure connection
- In the taskbar, click on the Network Manager applet (looks like two block monitors, one in front of the other) to bring up the connection menu
- Expand VPN Connections and select Kepard PPTP.

How to Configure
- Launch the System Preferences application
- Click Network under Internet & Wireless
- Click the Plus icon at the bottom of the source list on the left
- Select VPN for the interface, PPTP for the VPN Type, and enter Kepard PPTP for Service Name
- Click Create
- Select the newly created Kepard PPTP connection
- In the Server Address field enter server hostname from list below.

- Click Authentication Settings and enter your Kepard Password in the Password field, then click OK
- Click Advanced, check Send all traffic over VPN connection, then click OK
- Click Apply

To configure the L2TP/IPsec connection:
- Click Start , Connect To and click to Show all connections
- Click to menu File and select New Connection...
- Click Next
- Select Connect to the network at my workplace then Next

- Type a descriptive name in the Company Name field (Ex. Kepard L2TP)
- Enter one server hostname from list below

- To have a Kepard L2TP shortcut added to your desktop, click Add a shortcut
- Click Finish
- In the Connect window, click Properties
- Configure for L2TP/IPsec
- On the security tab, Select Advanced (custom settings)
- Change Data encryption to to Require encryption (disconnect if server declines).
- Check the checkbox Allow these protocols
- Check Challenge Handshake Authentification Protocol (CHAP)
- Check Microsoft CHAP Version 2 (MS-CHAP v2)
- Click OK
- On the Sucurity tab, click IPsec Settings and check the Use preshared key for authentification and enter Kepard shared key [Please login to obtain L2TP Key]
- On the Networking tab, change the dropdown box from Automatic to L2TP IPsec VPN
- Click OK
To Connect:
- Double-click the vpn icon on your desktop
- Type in your Kepard Login Email and Password in their respective fields and click Connect
- Click Connect
To Disconnect:
- Click the Network icon on the taskbar
- Click Disconnect in the status window that pops up

- In the Destination name field, type a descriptive name.(Ex. Kepard L2TP)
- Check Don't connect now then click Next
- Type in your Kepard Login Email and Password in their respective fields; leave Domain blank
- Check Remember this password
- Click Create and then Close
- Open VPN Connection Properties
- Click Start then click to Connect To
- Right-click your new connection and click Properties
- Configure for L2TP/IPsec
- On the security tab, Select Advanced (custom settings)

To configure the L2TP/IPsec connection:
- Open Network and Sharing Center in the Control Panel
- Go to the Windows Menu, then Control Panel
- Click on View network status and tasks
- If your Control Panel is changed to classic, Click to "Network and Sharing Center"
- Click Setup a new connection or network
- Choose Connect to a workplace then Next
- Click Use my Internet Connection (VPN)
- In the Internet address field, type one of the following server hostnames

- In the Destination name field, type a descriptive name. (Ex. Kepard L2TP)
- Check Don't connect now then click Next
- Type in your Kepard Login Email and Password in their respective fields; leave Domain blank
- Check Remember this password
- Click Create and then Close
- Open VPN Connection Properties
- In Network and Sharing Center, click Change adapter settings
- Right-click your new connection and click Properties
- Configure for L2TP/IPsec
- On the Security tab, change the dropdown box from Automatic to Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol with IPsec (L2TP/IPsec)
- On the Security tab, click Advanced settings , check the Use preshared key for authentification and enter Kepard shared key [Please login to obtain L2TP Key]. Click OK
- On the Security tab, change the Data Encryption to Require encryption (disconnect if server declines).
- Check the checkbox Allow these protocols
- Check Challenge Handshake Authentification Protocol (CHAP)
- Check Microsoft CHAP Version 2 (MS-CHAP v2)
To Connect:
- In the Windows Taskbar, click on the Network icon
- Click on your new connection, and then click on the Connect button
- Type in your Kepard Login Email and Password in their respective fields and click Connect
To Disconnect:
- Click the Network icon on the taskbar
- Click the name of your VPN connection, then Disconnect

- In System Preferences, click Network Settings
- Click the Apple then click System Preferences
- Under Internet & Wireless, click Network
- Click + (the plus icon)
- Select VPN for the interface, L2TP over IPSec for the VPN Type, and type a descriptive name for the Service Name (Ex. Kepard L2TP)
- Click Create
- Select the newly created VPN connection
- In the Server Address field enter server hostname from list below

To connect:
- Click the VPN icon in the menu bar
- Click Connect to your new VPN connection
